Investment Management Approach

The below content is from St. James’s Place

Financial security doesn’t happen by chance.

It takes vision, planning and commitment but, with the help of our experts, it needn’t be hard work.

We understand the responsibilities we have when you ask us to manage your wealth.

That’s why we’ve taken a distinctive approach to investment management and selected a team of expert external fund managers to manage our range of funds.

This team approach perfectly underpins and complements the quality advice and service you get from KWM Wealth.

Put simply, it frees up KWM to focus on what they do best – helping you achieve your financial goals – safe in the knowledge that investment selection and vital day-to-day monitoring is being handled by a team of experts.

Tom Beal, SJP Chief Investment Officer, comments that “we’ve created a radical, but effective, solution to the risk of investing, offering you access to what we believe to be the best fund managers as well as the opportunity to truly diversify your investment portfolio.”

The best investment talent is not limited to one firm or location. To manage your investments in the best possible way we need the freedom and flexibility to harness the skills of the world’s most talented fund managers.

This is why we do not employ in-house investment managers. Instead, we carefully select a number of external managers to manage our range of funds.

Some wealth advisers can only offer their investors a range of UK-based funds and managers. Our approach, however, gives you access to fund management expertise that is often only available to large institutional or overseas investors.

These exclusive relationships set our approach apart, giving you diversification and investment expertise that is beyond the scope of many wealth advisers.

The benefits of contracting out investment management are that

  • It gives us the freedom to choose from the best managers in the world.
  • It avoids any conflict of interest about appointing or retaining a fund manager.
  • We can change a manager at short notice if the need arises, without any charges, tax consequences or inconvenience to you.
  • It gives you a real opportunity to diversify your investments by spreading your money across funds managed by different managers with different styles.
  • We believe that this means we are able to offer you what we believe is the best possible investment proposition.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise.  You may get back less than the amount invested.

The SJP Investment Committee

The below content is from St. James’s Place

At the heart of our Investment Management Approach is our Investment Committee.

Its job, put simply, is to ‘manage the managers’, through independent oversight, and it ensures we are always doing right by both KWM Wealth and you, improving your investment success.

It achieves this by focusing on three areas:

Selecting the best investment managers (through a rigorous global research process)
Continually monitoring the managers to ensure they stay at the top of their game
Changing managers when necessary – without any adverse consequences for you.
Senior members of SJP sit on the Investment Committee, bringing a wealth of investment experience from extensive careers in financial services and fund management.

However, we also have a number of independent members. They have been carefully selected to bring their individual expertise to the decision-making process and to represent the views of those who will ultimately be impacted by the performance of our funds – you.

Investment Consultants

Finding and monitoring the best investment talent requires specialist knowledge, detailed analysis and a lot of legwork.

So, our Investment Management team is assisted by a number of independent investment consultancy firms. The consultants’ independence ensures that they can operate with complete objectivity when researching and reviewing your investments.

In the same way as we do with our fund managers, each of the consultants is engaged on the strength of their skills, knowledge and experience.

Our investment consultants play a vital role in selecting and monitoring fund managers, as well as assisting the Investment Management team with investment strategy and the development of our fund range.

This provides you with peace of mind that those managing your money are rigorously monitored by full-time professionals and any investment manager changes will be implemented promptly and seamlessly.

A global approach to selecting Fund Managers

The below content is from St. James’s Place

A key to the distinctive St. James’s Place approach is the ability to identify and select fund managers from around the world.

No two people want to invest in the same way. We all view risk differently. And we all have our own vision what we want to achieve, too.

That’s why we choose our fund managers across the globe. With such a range of talent, we’re sure to have a match for you.

Contracting out the management of our funds gives us greater freedom and the flexibility to source investment expertise on a global scale.

Our managers are based in cities from London to Cape Town, Toronto to Sydney.

This distinctive approach of SJP also provides you, as a client of KWM, with the benefits of exclusivity.

We have multiple funds comprising multiple fund strategies. Some of those funds are managed with the strategy of a single fund management company. Some combine the strategies of several fund managers from around the world.

Some of these strategies are available only to clients of SJP, providing exclusivity. These exclusive relationships set our approach apart, giving you diversification and investment expertise that is beyond the scope of many wealth advisers.

We believe that this means we are able to offer you what we believe is the best possible investment proposition.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise.  You may get back less than the amount invested.

Responsible Investing

The below content is from St. James’s Place

Our world is changing faster than anyone predicted. We believe responsible investing has an important role to play in shaping a better world and building a sustainable future.

Responsible investing is not about sacrificing returns on your money. Rather, it is a key metric when looking at a company’s future potential.  As shareholders demand action, the need for companies to consider their impact on the planet grows, as does the consequences for those companies that fail to adapt.

By thinking carefully about how and where we all invest our pensions and other savings, we can influence the strategy and direction of companies to evolve into better versions of themselves.

When putting responsible investing into practice, fund managers – the people that manage our funds – consider three key factors: environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG). Put simply: planet, people and fair play. These factors are used to assess how companies behave and manage the effects their actions have on the people and planet around them.

Responsible investing doesn’t have to be a trade-off between doing the right thing and achieving long-term returns.

Instead, we expect our fund managers to consider environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities as part of their investment decision making.

Our fund managers regularly engage with businesses to hold them to account and ensure they are making measurable strides towards sustainability.

We believe that through responsible investing, we can help shape a better world and build a sustainable future.

SJP Charitable Foundation

The below content is from St. James’s Place

Formed in 1992, the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the St. James’s Place Group and has raised over £110m since inception.

“The Foundation has always been a very special part of the St. James’s Place business and its continued growth demonstrates clearly how special to everyone it truly is and epitomises the founding principle on which it was formed ‘to give back to those less fortunate and make a positive and lasting difference to people’s lives.”
Andrew Croft, Chair of Trustees, St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation.

Approximately 90% of the money raised goes to supporting UK charities, with the remaining 10% being allocated to charities overseas, particularly those helping children and young people to escape poverty, malnutrition and neglect. Since its formation, the Charitable Foundation has aimed to make a positive and lasting change to the lives of children and young people. Supporting young people is still our largest focus area, although today our work stretches across four main themes:

Children and Young People

We aim to make a positive and lasting difference to people’s lives and supporting young people is still our largest area of focus. We look to support young people up to the ages of 25 who are socially or economically disadvantaged or mentally/physically disabled.

Cancer

We award funding to organisations who provide practical and emotional support to people with all kinds of cancer across the UK. These organisations are a lifeline not just to the patient but to a wider network of friends and family, making a big difference to the quality of life for all affected.

Hospices

Since 2016 the Foundation has partnered with Hospice UK, the umbrella organisation for the hospice movement supporting over 200 independent hospices throughout the country. Working together, the Foundation and Hospice UK wanted to encourage new projects to be developed that would make a tangible difference to people who live with cancer.

Mental Health

Our funding for Mental Health supports the wellbeing of young people and adults. We work with a range of charities to provide better support to those facing mental health issues.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Charitable Foundation and want to know more about applying for a grant or charities we support, please contact your KWM Wealth Adviser.
